About your trip:
13th-20th June. A North Sea crossing like no other with Excelsior, we'll set out from Lerwick, Shetland, heading for the coast of Norway (expect to spend 2-3 nights at sea). Weather and time permitting, we plan to make the party of the decade as we pay a visit to the small Norwegian island that had formerly been Excelsior's home, Svinør. Expect a warm Scandinavian welcome for the homecoming hero. From there we will cross the Skagerrak to Sweden's famous port of Gothenburg to end our journey of Nordic Adventure and serious offshore sailing.
This trip open to all ages 15+ and is suitable for the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award residential. Contact us to find out more!
About your destination:
Svinør Island, a hidden gem in the world of sailing, offers a captivating maritime experience like no other. Nestled in the pristine waters of Norway, this enchanting island boasts rugged natural beauty, serene coves, and a unique blend of seafaring history and modern adventure. Sailing in and around Svinør Island is a journey through time, where you can explore historic harbors, quaint fishing villages, and untouched coastal landscapes. With its sheltered bays and challenging open waters, Svinør Island offers a diverse range of sailing experiences.
Gothenburg is a bustling modern city on the west coast of Sweden, with beautiful historic architecture. Highlights include its Dutch-style canals, the Liseberg amusement park, the Museum of Art, a rainforest at Universeum, and incredible seafood. Göteborg Landvetter Airport is 25 km (16 mi) southeast of the city centre.
Before we set out, we'll give you a thorough briefing on what to expect and how to operate the rig, whilst you get to know your shipmates. You'll learn about planning the navigation, and the intricacies of what's happening with the weather. You'll be divided into your watches, and each team will be responsible for one of 3 4-hour shifts sailing the vessel (helming, navigating, and managing the sail plan), as well as preparing meals for the rest of the crew, and keeping Excelsior shipshape.
All meals on board are provided, but please let us know of any dietary restrictions in good time so that we can prepare. You'll need to bring with you plenty of warm clothes (including gloves and a hat and wellies, although we can provide some wet weather gear), and a sleeping bag and pillow-case. A full kit list will be issued before the trip.
