Working with the Trust
TRUSTEES / NON EXECUTIVE / VOLUNTARY - Excelsior Trust -
Closes: March 31st 2024
New Trustees sought for well-established heritage sailing trust in East Anglia
As a result of a review by the Board of The Excelsior Trust, the charity is looking to further strengthen its internal structure by the addition of trustees with specific areas of experience.
Established in 1982 the Lowestoft-based charity’s mission is to restore and maintain Excelsior – a 103-year-old Lowestoft Sailing Smack – one of the sixty most important historic vessels in the UK and registered with the National Historic Ships. Excelsior serves as a platform for delivering remarkable benefits to all individuals through sail training programmes. To date the Trust has taken nearly 11,000 young people to sea offering transformative experiences.
This year the professional crew, in addition to short east coast day sails, is taking groups to participate in prestigious events such as The Tall Ships Race around the Baltic Sea as well as additional trips to Scotland and northern Europe and provide marine familiarisation programmes for young people considering maritime careers.
As part of its regeneration the Trust is also developing another of its major assets, its two acre yard at Harbour Road, Lowestoft into a significant maritime heritage hub with traditional blacksmith, maritime wood craft, glass blowing and ship welding professionals all working together in a symbiotic relationship to ensure traditional maritime heritage skills will not be lost.
Excelsior Trust is keen to contribute to local community engagement by encouraging accessibility to individuals who might wish to investigate traditional maritime crafts as a potential career. Excelsior’s Yard has its own slipway – it recently hosted the renowned Reedham Chain Ferry for refurbishment.
The Trust has financial support from Lowestoft Town Council who recently awarded the vessel Freedom of the Town. The Council recognises that wherever Excelsior is on her travels, she is a travelling ambassador for the region.
The Trust, whose patron is HRH The Princess Royal, is seeking to recruit four additional trustees/non-executive directors with experience in the commercial, financial and business sectors as well as someone with an HR background ideally within the voluntary sector. The incumbent(s) will play a pivotal role in providing strategic guidance and oversight to ensure the organisation’s commercial viability, operational efficiency and effective human resource management.
All Excelsior Trustees are covered by liability insurance.
